How it works
From draft to post in a minute
Three steps, no account needed.
- Step 1
Write your post
Type or paste your draft. The counter uses X's own weighting, so emoji, links, and styled letters count the way X counts them.
- Step 2
Format and split
Select words to make them bold or italic. Switch to Thread and long drafts split into numbered posts at clean sentence breaks.
- Step 3
Copy or open in X
Copy each post, or open X with your text filled in. You check it there and post it yourself.
Counting
How X counts characters
X doesn't count characters the way a word processor does. These are the rules the counter follows.
Links always count as 23
X wraps every link in a t.co short link, so a 12-character link and a 200-character one both use 23.
Emoji and CJK count as 2
An emoji counts as 2 even when it's a family or a skin-tone variant built from several code points. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters count as 2 each.
Styled letters count as 2
Bold and italic letters are Unicode symbols outside the basic alphabet. A bold word costs twice the characters of a plain one.
Writing
Tips for posts people finish
Small habits that make posts easier to read.
Front-load the hook
The timeline shows the first lines of a long post and hides the rest behind Show more. Put the point there.
Keep hashtags to one or two
A wall of hashtags reads as spam. One relevant tag does the job.
Use styling for emphasis only
Screen readers can spell styled letters out one by one, and X search won't match them. Bold a word, not a paragraph.
Make each thread post stand alone
People land on posts in the middle of a thread from replies and quotes. Give every post enough context to make sense.

Limits of the composer
What this page does and doesn't do.
It doesn't post for you
No login, no connected account. Open in X starts a post on x.com with your text filled in, and you press Post.
Threads post one at a time
X's share link takes one post. Post the first one, then reply to it with each next post you copied.
Nothing leaves your browser
Counting, formatting, and splitting all happen on your device. Your draft is saved locally so a refresh doesn't lose it.
Long posts need X Premium
Posts over 280 characters only publish from Premium accounts. Long post mode drafts against the 25,000 limit.

FAQ
Tweet composer FAQ
What is the character limit on X?
280 characters for a standard post. X Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000. Switch to Long post mode to draft against the higher limit.
Why does the counter differ from a normal character count?
X weighs characters. Most Latin letters count as 1, while emoji, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2, and every link counts as 23 however long it is. This counter uses the same rules.
How do I make bold or italic text on Twitter?
X has no formatting buttons, so bold and italic posts use Unicode look-alike letters. Select text in the composer, pick a style, and copy the post. It pastes into X, LinkedIn, and most bios.
Do bold letters cost more characters?
Yes. Styled letters live outside the basic alphabet, so X counts each one as 2. The counter accounts for it as you type.
Is styled text bad for accessibility?
It can be. Screen readers may read each styled letter out one by one, and X search won't match styled words. Use it for a word or two of emphasis, not whole posts.
How does the thread maker split my text?
It breaks at paragraphs first, then sentences, then words, so posts never cut mid-thought when there's a cleaner place. Add a line with just --- to force a break where you want one.
Can I number my thread posts?
Yes. Turn on numbering and each post ends in 1/5, 2/5 and so on. The splitter leaves room for the numbers so nothing goes over the limit.
Does this tool post to my account?
No, and it never asks you to log in. Copy a post, or use Open in X to start a post on x.com with your text already filled in. You review it and post it yourself.
Can I change the name, photo, badge, and numbers?
Yes. Set your name, handle, verified badge, post time, and the reply, repost, like, bookmark, and view counts. The preview updates as you type.
Can I download my post as an image?
Yes. Press Download to save the preview as a sharp PNG, in light, dim, or dark. It's made in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
Is my profile photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser reads the image, shrinks it, and keeps it on your device. It's never sent to our servers.
Is my draft private?
Yes. Everything runs in your browser. Your draft is saved on this device so it survives a refresh, and it's never sent to our servers.
