Yelp API: common questions

Is there a Yelp scraper API that works without a Yelp API key?

Yes. Social Fetch provides four Yelp routes under /v1/yelp/.... You authenticate with a Social Fetch API key (x-api-key). You do not register a Yelp developer app or send any Yelp credentials.

What Yelp data does Social Fetch cover?

Business search (GET /v1/yelp/businesses/search), business details (GET /v1/yelp/businesses/{alias}), reviews (GET /v1/yelp/businesses/{alias}/reviews), and photos (GET /v1/yelp/businesses/{alias}/photos). Exact fields live under /docs/api and on each endpoint page.

How do I search Yelp businesses by category and city?

Call GET /v1/yelp/businesses/search with a required query (name, service, or category) and location (city, neighbourhood, postcode, or address). Add sort (recommended, highest_rated, or most_reviewed) and page from 1 to 24. Each page returns up to 10 businesses.

Can I use a Yelp URL instead of the business alias?

Yes. On details, reviews, and photos the alias path value can be the alias itself or a full https://www.yelp.com/biz/... URL. Yelp country domains are accepted too.

Which Yelp reviews can I get?

Set category to recommended, not_recommended, or removed. Each review carries the reviewer's name and location, rating, date, text, language, reactions, review photos, and owner replies when present. Pass data.page.nextCursor as cursor to read the next page.

Can I see a business's star distribution and review counts?

Yes. The reviews response includes a listing summary with overall rating, claimed status, review counts per category, and the one-to-five star breakdown.

How much does the Yelp API cost?

You buy credit packs (or spend the 100 free signup credits). Search is 1 credit per page; details, reviews, and photos are 2 credits per completed lookup. Failed requests are not charged. Always check meta.creditsCharged. There is no required monthly subscription for pay-as-you-go packs.

Can I post reviews or reply to reviewers through this API?

No. Every Yelp route is read-only and returns publicly visible data. Posting reviews, owner replies, and listing management stay in Yelp's own tools.

Is scraping Yelp data legal?

Social Fetch returns publicly visible business data. You are responsible for how you use it under Yelp's terms, applicable law, and your own compliance review. We do not give legal advice.

The Yelp API in detailHow the Yelp routes work, what they cost, and how they differ from the official API.

Why teams use Social Fetch for Yelp

Yelp is where local customers leave the reviews that decide who gets the booking. Social Fetch exposes four GET routes under /v1/yelp/...: search businesses by name or category near a location, fetch a business by alias or Yelp URL, list its reviews, and list its photos. Responses come back as { data, meta } with meta.requestId and meta.creditsCharged.

Business search starts at 1 credit per page. Details, reviews, and photos are 2 credits per completed lookup. The same API key covers the rest of the marketplace catalog (24 platforms, 237 endpoints). Posting reviews, replying as an owner, and managing a listing stay in Yelp's own tools.

How to call the Yelp API

  1. 1. Create a key and search a real market

Sign up at Social Fetch and copy an sfk_… key. New accounts get 100 free credits. Call GET /v1/yelp/businesses/search?query=…&location=… with a category and a city so you see business rows, data.resolvedLocation, and meta.creditsCharged before you wire jobs.

  2. 2. Follow a business from search to reviews

Take a row's alias (the slug in its Yelp URL) and call GET /v1/yelp/businesses/{alias} for details, GET /v1/yelp/businesses/{alias}/reviews?category=recommended for reviews, and GET /v1/yelp/businesses/{alias}/photos for photos. You can also pass a full Yelp business URL in place of the alias.

  3. 3. Page through and store rows

Search pages with page (up to 10 businesses each). Reviews and photos page with cursor — pass data.page.nextCursor while data.page.hasMore is true. Key rows on alias, and log meta.requestId on any row you need to trace.

What each Yelp route returns

  • Business search by name, service, or category near a city, neighbourhood, postcode, or address — sorted recommended, highest rated, or most reviewed.
  • Search rows with alias, rating, review count, price range, phone, categories, address, coordinates, photo, and closed status.
  • Business details by alias or public Yelp URL: rating, review count, claimed status, website, opening hours, and amenities.
  • Reviews in three categories — recommended, not recommended, and removed — with rating, text, date, reactions, review photos, and owner replies.
  • Listing summary with the star distribution and review counts per category.
  • Business photos with URL, thumbnail, caption, size, and upload date.
  • Cursor pagination on reviews and photos; page-number pagination on search.
  • Shared { data, meta } envelope with Google, Instagram, and the rest of the catalog.

How much does the Yelp API cost?

Business search is 1 credit per page. Business details, reviews (one page, any category), and photos are 2 credits per completed lookup each. Failed requests are not charged. Always trust meta.creditsCharged. Credits never expire on pay-as-you-go packs. Signup includes 100 free credits.

Social Fetch vs the official Yelp API

Yelp's own developer platform needs a registered app and its own credentials. Social Fetch reads publicly visible Yelp pages instead: no Yelp developer key, no OAuth, and the same envelope as the rest of the catalog. Use Yelp's own tools when you need to post reviews, respond as an owner, or manage a listing.
