Snapchat API: common questions
Is there a Snapchat scraper API / Snapchat data API?
Yes. Social Fetch provides REST routes for public Snapchat profiles, Spotlight videos, and Spotlight comments. Authenticate with a Social Fetch API key (x-api-key); you do not need Snapchat developer credentials for these public lookups.
What Snapchat data does Social Fetch cover?
Three operations under the Snapchat tag: GET /v1/snapchat/profiles/{handle}, GET /v1/snapchat/spotlights, and GET /v1/snapchat/spotlights/comments. Profile responses include display name, bio, avatar, follower count, recent Spotlights, highlights, the current story, and related accounts. Spotlight responses include the caption, video URL, duration, author, sound, hashtags, and engagement metrics. Exact fields are on each endpoint page and in /docs/api.
Do I need a Snapchat developer app or OAuth?
No. You only need a Social Fetch API key. These routes read public pages, so there is no Snapchat login or creator authorization step.
How do I find Spotlight URLs?
Look up a profile with GET /v1/snapchat/profiles/{handle} and read data.spotlights[].url. Pass any of those URLs to the Spotlight and Spotlight comments routes. URLs in the snapchat.com/spotlight/{id} and snapchat.com/@handle/spotlight/{id} forms both work.
How does pagination work on Spotlight comments?
GET /v1/snapchat/spotlights/comments returns a page of comments plus data.page.nextCursor and data.page.hasMore. Pass nextCursor back as the cursor query param to fetch the next page, and stop when hasMore is false. Treat the cursor as opaque and send it back unchanged — it can be long.
Why do comments have no handle?
Snapchat does not expose a commenter's username on Spotlight comments. Each comment has the display name and an opaque user id, plus an opaque comment id. Use the display name for display only; it is not unique.
What identifiers do Snapchat routes accept?
The profile route takes the handle as a path segment — the name in snapchat.com/@{handle} — with or without a leading @. Handles can contain dots, hyphens, and underscores. The Spotlight routes take a full Spotlight URL in the url query param. A profile URL on a Spotlight route returns 400 and points you at the profile endpoint.
How much does the Snapchat API cost on Social Fetch?
You buy credit packs (or use the 100 free signup credits). Profile, Spotlight, and Spotlight comments requests cost 1 credit each on a successful completed request, and each page of comments is its own request. There is no required monthly subscription for pay-as-you-go packs. Always check meta.creditsCharged.
Does HTTP 200 always mean the profile or Spotlight was found?
No. HTTP 200 means the request finished. Check data.lookupStatus: found means you got data; not_found means the handle or URL did not resolve. For comments, a found result with an empty list means the Spotlight has no public comments or the id is unknown. Persist meta.requestId when you need to debug a miss.
Can I use Snapchat routes from agents or MCP?
Yes. The same operations appear as typed MCP tools and can be reached via Ask (POST /v1/ask) for plain-English exploration. For production jobs, pin the typed GET paths so routing stays explicit.
Can I get private Snaps, chats, or friend lists?
No. These routes return public profile and Spotlight data only. Private Snaps, chats, friend lists, and anything behind a Snapchat login are not available.
Is scraping Snapchat data legal?
Social Fetch returns publicly visible profile, Spotlight, and comment data. You are responsible for how you use it under Snapchat's terms, applicable law, and your own compliance review. We do not give legal advice.
The Snapchat API in detailHow the Snapchat routes work, what they cost, and how they differ from the official API.
Why teams use Social Fetch for Snapchat
Snapchat Spotlight is the platform's public short-video feed. Social Fetch exposes three GETs: a profile by handle, a Spotlight video by URL, and cursor-paginated Spotlight comments. Every response uses { data, meta } with data.lookupStatus, meta.requestId, and meta.creditsCharged.
How to call the Snapchat API
1. Create an API key
Sign up at Social Fetch and copy a key (
sfk_…). New accounts get 100 free credits — enough to try a profile, a Spotlight, and a page of comments against live data.2. Call a Snapchat route
Send
GET /v1/snapchat/profiles/{handle}withx-api-key. Take a URL fromdata.spotlights[].urland pass it toGET /v1/snapchat/spotlights?url=…orGET /v1/snapchat/spotlights/comments?url=…. Use the TypeScript SDK or curl in production jobs; keep the playground for one-off checks in the app.3. Page and persist
Branch on
data.lookupStatusbefore writing. For comments, passdata.page.nextCursorback ascursoruntilhasMoreis false. Logmeta.requestIdfor support; bill frommeta.creditsCharged.
What each Snapchat route returns
- Profile lookups by handle — display name, bio, avatar, follower count, website, category, and created and updated dates.
- The same profile call returns recent Spotlight videos with views, shares, and comment counts, plus highlights, the current story, and related accounts.
- Single Spotlight lookups by URL — caption, video and thumbnail URLs, duration, dimensions, author, sound, hashtags, and generated title, description, and keywords.
- Spotlight engagement metrics: views, shares, comments, boosts, and recommends.
- Spotlight comments with an opaque cursor — text, timestamp, likes, reply count, and the commenter display name.
- Same Social Fetch API key and response envelope as TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and the rest of the marketplace.
How much does the Snapchat API cost?
Snapchat profile, Spotlight, and Spotlight comments routes charge 1 credit per successful completed request. A comments page costs 1 credit whether it returns one comment or twenty-five, so paging a long thread costs 1 credit per page. Credits never expire on pay-as-you-go packs. Confirm every response with meta.creditsCharged — that field is the billing source of truth.
Social Fetch vs the official Snapchat API
Snapchat's developer tools cover login, sharing, and advertising. They do not return public profile or Spotlight data. Social Fetch routes are public read-only lookups with a Social Fetch API key — no Snapchat app and no creator OAuth.
