What is HikerAPI?
An unofficial, Instagram-only REST API. It sells read access to public Instagram data (profiles, posts, reels, stories, highlights, followers, comments, hashtags and locations) from a prepaid balance, authenticated with an x-access-key header.
How much does HikerAPI cost?
It charges per request, with the rate set by the tier you've unlocked: $0.02 on Start, $0.001 at a $100 balance, $0.00069 at about $300 and $0.0006 at $599. New accounts get 100 free requests, and the balance never expires. Social Fetch charges 1 credit for most Instagram requests: about $0.00165 at the Scale pack rate or $0.014 on the $14 Starter pack.
Does Social Fetch have Instagram stories?
No. Social Fetch returns highlights (/v1/instagram/profiles/{handle}/highlights), which are saved story albums, but not live stories. If you need current stories, HikerAPI covers them.
Can Social Fetch list an Instagram account's followers?
No. We return follower and following counts on the profile, not the lists themselves. HikerAPI has follower and following list endpoints. On TikTok and X, Social Fetch does return follower lists.
Is Social Fetch cheaper than HikerAPI?
For small purchases, yes: 1,000 Instagram lookups cost $14 on our Starter pack and $20 on HikerAPI's Start tier. At volume, no: HikerAPI's Standard tier is $1 per 1,000 requests and Ultra is $0.60, against about $1.65 per 1,000 on our Scale pack. Social Fetch is the better value when you use more than one platform or need transcripts and webhooks.
Does either API need my Instagram login?
No. Both return public data with an API key; neither asks for an Instagram account. Private accounts aren't readable on either: Social Fetch returns lookupStatus: private instead of posts.
Can I use both?

HikerAPI goes deeper on Instagram
HikerAPI does one platform. Its public OpenAPI spec lists 157 GET operations, 111 of them not deprecated, all for Instagram: user profiles, posts and reels, stories and highlights, follower and following lists, comments and likers, hashtags, locations, music search, shop listings, and a set of GraphQL-backed variants. Many resources have v1, v2 and GraphQL versions, so the operation count overstates the number of distinct data types, but the coverage is real.
Social Fetch has 20 Instagram endpoints. We don't return live stories, follower or following lists, post likers, or posts by location (/v1/instagram/search finds places, but there is no location feed). If your product is built on any of those, HikerAPI is the better fit and this page won't change that.
HikerAPI pricing: cheaper at volume, once you unlock it
HikerAPI charges per request from a prepaid balance. The rate depends on the tier you've unlocked by holding a balance: Start is $0.02 a request (with a $20 top-up), Standard $0.001 at $100, Business $0.00069 at about $300, and Ultra $0.0006 at $599. Once unlocked, a tier stays on your account even if the balance runs down. It charges 200, 400, 403 and 404 responses and doesn't charge 5xx errors.
At the Standard rate, 1,000 Instagram requests cost $1. On Social Fetch they cost about $1.65 at the Scale pack rate, or $14 if you only buy the Starter pack. For pure Instagram volume, HikerAPI is cheaper per request, and we'd rather say so than bury it. The Social Fetch case is breadth and features rather than the lowest Instagram unit price.
When Instagram isn't the only platform
Most Instagram projects don't stay Instagram-only. Creator vetting wants TikTok and YouTube; brand monitoring wants X and Reddit; a research tool wants all of them. HikerAPI doesn't cover them, so each new platform means another vendor, key, billing balance and JSON shape.
Social Fetch covers 23 platforms and 232 endpoints with one key and one { data, meta } envelope. Every response carries meta.creditsCharged and meta.requestId, and the TikTok, YouTube and X routes follow the same conventions as Instagram.
What Social Fetch adds on Instagram
A few things HikerAPI's public spec doesn't include: reel and post transcripts (/v1/instagram/posts/transcript, 1 credit), a one-call engagement audit with average and median engagement rates and the best and worst recent posts (/v1/instagram/profiles/{handle}/engagement, 5 credits), and trending reels (/v1/instagram/reels/trending).
Monitors watch an account's posts or reels, or a hashtag, on a schedule you set and send a signed webhook when something new appears. Each check is billed at the route's normal price, with no monitor fee. With HikerAPI you would write and host that poller yourself.
Moving Instagram reads over
The common reads map directly. HikerAPI's user-by-username lookup becomes GET /v1/instagram/profiles/{handle}; user media and clips become /v1/instagram/profiles/{handle}/posts and /v1/instagram/profiles/{handle}/reels; media comments become /v1/instagram/posts/comments, which takes the post URL. Field names differ, so budget time for mapping and a test run; schemas are in the API reference.
Keep HikerAPI for anything we don't cover. A split setup, HikerAPI for stories and follower lists and Social Fetch for everything cross-platform, is a reasonable place to land.
Bottom line: Instagram-only depth: HikerAPI. Instagram plus everything else: Social Fetch.
