# What is engagement rate?

Engagement rate (ER) is interactions divided by audience size — likes, comments, and sometimes shares relative to followers or views. There's no universal formula; the number only means something once you know which one produced it.

## What the term actually covers

ER = (interactions ÷ denominator) × 100. Interactions are usually likes + comments, sometimes + shares or saves. Denominator is followers (follower-based ER) or views (view-based ER) — different questions, not interchangeable.

Social Fetch has no single ER endpoint. Profile and post lookups return raw counts; you compute the ratio client-side with the formula that fits your comparison.

## A worked example

500 likes, 40 comments, 10 shares, 10,000 followers → (550 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 5.5% follower-based ER.

Same post, 50,000 views → (550 ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 1.1% view-based ER. Quote the formula or the number is meaningless across comparisons.

## How it's used in practice

Most uses are relative: trend over last N posts, vs a niche peer, vs account baseline. Keep formula and platform fixed.

From Social Fetch: profile lookup for followers, recent posts/videos for interaction counts, apply your formula and average across a window.

## Engagement rate vs raw reach and impressions

ER is a ratio; reach and impressions are counts. High reach + low ER is common (wide distribution, weak response). Follower count alone doesn't show engagement quality.

## Common mistakes

Comparing ER across platforms as one metric — different interaction types and norms.

Using one post's ER as the account average — average over recent posts instead.

Quoting ER without stating formula, denominator, and window.

## What it is not

Not a pre-computed Social Fetch field — derived from raw metrics the API returns.

Not content quality, reach, or growth by itself — one ratio at one point in time.

## FAQ

### How is engagement rate calculated?

Interactions ÷ denominator × 100. Denominator is followers or views/impressions — not comparable across formulas.

### What's a good engagement rate on TikTok?

No universal benchmark — depends on formula, niche, and follower size. Compare within platform and formula.

### Does Social Fetch have an engagement rate endpoint?

No dedicated ER endpoint. Raw likes, comments, shares, views, and followers — compute client-side.

### Why do engagement rate numbers differ between tools?

Different formulas: followers vs views, which interactions count. Both can be correct for their definition.

### Is follower-based or view-based engagement rate better?

Different questions — audience fraction vs viewers who engaged. Pick one and stay consistent.

### Can I compute engagement rate from the Social Fetch API?

Yes — profile + recent posts/videos, formula client-side. Ask can pull the underlying counts.

### Why does engagement rate drop as follower count grows?

Larger denominator plus audience dilution and algorithmic reach — common pattern, not always a problem.

### What counts as an 'engagement' — do views or saves count?

Views are usually the denominator, not numerator. Saves sometimes in numerator where exposed; likes, comments, shares most common.
