# HikerAPI alternative: Social Fetch vs HikerAPI

HikerAPI is a deep, Instagram-only read API: stories, follower lists, likers and location feeds, from $0.60 per 1,000 requests at volume. Social Fetch covers most of the same Instagram reads (stories, hashtag, location and audio feeds, comments, following lists) but not follower lists or likers, and puts Instagram next to TikTok, X, YouTube and the rest on one key, with transcripts and post webhooks.

## Pricing (last verified 2026-09-24)

**What does Instagram data cost on each?** HikerAPI charges a flat price per request, and the price depends on which tier you have unlocked: $0.02 on Start, $0.001 once your balance has reached $100, $0.00069 at about $300 and $0.0006 at $599. Social Fetch bills credits per completed request: 1 for most Instagram routes, 5 for the engagement audit of a profile, 11 for a post with its files hosted. At volume, HikerAPI is cheaper per Instagram request.

## HikerAPI goes deeper on Instagram

HikerAPI does one platform. Its public OpenAPI spec lists 157 GET operations, 111 of them not deprecated, all for Instagram: user profiles, posts and reels, stories and highlights, follower and following lists, comments and likers, hashtags, locations, music search, shop listings, and a set of GraphQL-backed variants. Many resources have v1, v2 and GraphQL versions, so the operation count overstates the number of distinct data types, but the coverage is real.

Social Fetch has 44 Instagram operations across its v1 and v2 routes. They cover profiles, posts, Reels, live stories, highlights, comments and replies, transcripts, the accounts a profile follows, hashtag, location and audio feeds with a search for each, Popular topics and trending Reels. We don't return follower lists, post likers or shop listings. If your product is built on any of those, HikerAPI is the better fit and this page won't change that.

## HikerAPI pricing: cheaper at volume, once you unlock it

HikerAPI charges per request from a prepaid balance. The rate depends on the tier you've unlocked by holding a balance: Start is $0.02 a request (with a $20 top-up), Standard $0.001 at $100, Business $0.00069 at about $300, and Ultra $0.0006 at $599. Once unlocked, a tier stays on your account even if the balance runs down. It charges 200, 400, 403 and 404 responses and doesn't charge 5xx errors.

At the Standard rate, 1,000 Instagram requests cost $1. On Social Fetch they cost about $1.64 at the Scale pack rate, or $14 if you only buy the Starter pack. For pure Instagram volume, HikerAPI is cheaper per request, and we'd rather say so than bury it. The Social Fetch case is breadth and features rather than the lowest Instagram unit price.

## When Instagram isn't the only platform

Most Instagram projects don't stay Instagram-only. Creator vetting wants TikTok and YouTube; brand monitoring wants X and Reddit; a research tool wants all of them. HikerAPI doesn't cover them, so each new platform means another vendor, key, billing balance and JSON shape.

Social Fetch covers 25 platforms and 264 endpoints with one key and one `{ data, meta }` envelope. Every response carries `meta.creditsCharged` and `meta.requestId`, and the [TikTok](https://www.socialfetch.dev/platforms/tiktok), [YouTube](https://www.socialfetch.dev/platforms/youtube) and [X](https://www.socialfetch.dev/platforms/twitter) routes follow the same conventions as [Instagram](https://www.socialfetch.dev/platforms/instagram).

## What Social Fetch adds on Instagram

A few things HikerAPI's public spec doesn't include: reel and post transcripts (`/v2/instagram/media/{media}/transcript`, 1 credit), a one-call engagement audit with average and median engagement rates and the best and worst recent posts (`/v2/instagram/profiles/{profile}/engagement`, 5 credits for an audited profile), and trending reels (`/v2/instagram/reels/trending`).

[Monitors](https://www.socialfetch.dev/monitoring) watch an account's posts or reels, or a hashtag, on a schedule you set and send a signed webhook when something new appears. Each check is billed at the route's normal price, with no monitor fee. With HikerAPI you would write and host that poller yourself.

## Moving Instagram reads over

The common reads map directly. HikerAPI's user-by-username lookup becomes `GET /v2/instagram/profiles/{profile}`; user media and clips become `/v2/instagram/profiles/{profile}/media` and `/v2/instagram/profiles/{profile}/media?tab=reels`; media comments become `/v2/instagram/media/{media}/comments`, which takes a shortcode, URL or media id. Field names differ, so budget time for mapping and a test run; schemas are in the [API reference](https://www.socialfetch.dev/docs/api/v2/instagram).

Keep HikerAPI for anything we don't cover. A split setup, HikerAPI for follower lists and likers and Social Fetch for everything cross-platform, is a reasonable place to land.

## When HikerAPI is the better choice

- You need Instagram follower lists or post likers
- You need shop data or a wider Instagram surface than our routes cover
- You only need Instagram and want the lowest price per request at volume
- You're happy to hold a $100 to $599 balance to unlock cheaper tiers

## When Social Fetch is the better choice

- You need TikTok, X, YouTube, LinkedIn or Reddit next to Instagram
- You want reel transcripts or an engagement audit without building them
- You want a webhook when an account posts, without running a poller
- You're spending small amounts: 1,000 lookups cost $14 on Starter vs $20 on HikerAPI's Start tier
- You want one response envelope and SDK across every platform

## Verdict: Instagram-only depth: HikerAPI. Instagram plus everything else: Social Fetch.

HikerAPI is the deeper and, at volume, cheaper Instagram API: follower lists, likers and a much longer endpoint list from $0.001 a request once you hold a $100 balance. Social Fetch has 44 Instagram operations, including stories and hashtag, location and audio feeds, and adds transcripts, an engagement audit, post webhooks and the same key for TikTok, X, YouTube and the rest. Pick on how many platforms your product needs, not on the Instagram unit price alone.

## FAQ

### What is HikerAPI?

An unofficial, Instagram-only REST API. It sells read access to public Instagram data (profiles, posts, reels, stories, highlights, followers, comments, hashtags and locations) from a prepaid balance, authenticated with an `x-access-key` header.

### How much does HikerAPI cost?

It charges per request, with the rate set by the tier you've unlocked: $0.02 on Start, $0.001 at a $100 balance, $0.00069 at about $300 and $0.0006 at $599. New accounts get 100 free requests, and the balance never expires. Social Fetch charges 1 credit for most Instagram requests: about $0.00165 at the Scale pack rate or $0.014 on the $14 Starter pack.

### Does Social Fetch have Instagram stories?

Yes. `GET /v2/instagram/profiles/{profile}/stories` returns a profile's live stories from the last 24 hours, and `GET /v2/instagram/profiles/{profile}/highlights` and `GET /v2/instagram/highlights/{highlightId}` return saved highlight albums and the stories inside one. Each is 1 credit.

### Can Social Fetch list an Instagram account's followers?

Not followers. `GET /v2/instagram/profiles/{profile}/following` lists the accounts a profile follows, and the profile card has follower and following counts, but there is no follower list. HikerAPI has both lists. On TikTok and X, Social Fetch does return follower lists.

### Is Social Fetch cheaper than HikerAPI?

For small purchases, yes: 1,000 Instagram lookups cost $14 on our Starter pack and $20 on HikerAPI's Start tier. At volume, no: HikerAPI's Standard tier is $1 per 1,000 requests and Ultra is $0.60, against about $1.64 per 1,000 on our Scale pack. Social Fetch is the better value when you use more than one platform or need transcripts and webhooks.

### Does either API need my Instagram login?

No. Both return public data with an API key; neither asks for an Instagram account. Private accounts aren't readable on either: Social Fetch returns `lookupStatus: private` instead of posts.

### Can I use both?

Yes, and many teams would. Use HikerAPI for follower lists and likers, and Social Fetch for Instagram posts, reels, stories and transcripts alongside TikTok, X, YouTube and the other platforms. See the [Instagram endpoint list](https://www.socialfetch.dev/platforms/instagram) to check which routes you'd move.
